Happy Birthday, Chiropractic!

While our wonderful patients give us reason to celebrate every day, September holds a special place in our hearts. Can you guess why?

Though some records are conflicted, it is widely believed that on September 18th, 1895, Dr. Daniel David (D.D.) Palmer performed the first ever chiropractic adjustment. That means the profession that has helped millions across the globe heal better naturally is celebrating its 126th birthday this month.

To celebrate, we’re sharing fun facts about chiropractic and how it came to be.

  • The first chiropractic adjustment was given by Dr. D.D. Palmer to Harvey Lilliard, a janitor. Harvey had lost his hearing more than a decade earlier, and allowed Dr. D.D. Palmer to examine him. Dr. Palmer found a misaligned spinal bone that was pressing on a nerve. After just a couple of adjustments, Harvey’s hearing returned.
  • Two years after the first chiropractic adjustment happened, Dr. D.D. Palmer opened the very first chiropractic school in Davenport, Iowa, which still stands today and is hailed as a renowned institution. Later, his son, Dr. B.J. Palmer took over until his death in 1961.
  • In addition to being the world’s first chiropractor, Dr. D.D. Palmer was a schoolteacher who raised bees and even opened a grocery store.
  • Mabel Heath Palmer, D.C., was married to Dr. B.J. Palmer and was a faculty member as well as treasurer of the Palmer School. She is widely hailed as the First Lady of Chiropractic.
  • In a 2019 poll of over 90 countries, it was revealed that there were over 103,000 chiropractors operating across the globe.*
